Vintage Story or Lay of the Land

Main Post:

Probably a biased place to post this question, but I've been getting youtube ads for both Vintage Story and Lay of the Land and have a hankering for something more in depth than minecraft. Anyone had any experience with both games and might be able to suggest one vs the other? Here's the very basics of what I know:

Vintage Story: Seems pretty brutal survival - which is a plus tbh! Love survivial games with in depth mechanics. It seems very minecraft cloney though with the surface level details, and I can't tell entirely just how detailed the building is compared with the survival mechanics. How deep are the other mechanics compared to survival? I hear the story is pretty cool

Lay of the Land: I don't know a ton about it yet and I know it's not fully released yet, but I like the immersive style of the destruction, like how trees geninuely fall down and how the individual voxels seem a lot more destructive or interactive. Seems like there's some cool fantasy mechanics like magic and destructive environments being used for traps. Anyone had much experience with it yet?

Top Comment: If you want something more in depth than MC nothing beats Vintage Story. Every mechanic has depth. To make leather you soak it in lime or borax, scrape it, soak it in weak tannin for a few days, soak it in strong tannin for a few days, then you get leather. To make your first pickaxe you first need to find clay, form the mold for a pickaxe voxel-by-voxel, form a crucible the same way, then fire them for a day or so in a pit kiln. You then need to make a pit and stack it with firewood and let it burn to create charcoal. After that you melt the nuggets in the crucible you hand-formed and fired, then pour it into your pickaxe mold and wait for it to cool. To get other tools (and tools of the tier above copper) you pour melted metal into an ingot mold, heat it in a forge, and shape it into the tool with an anvil and hammer. To grow crops you need to make sure the soil has enough of the correct nutrients, and rotate your crops accordingly. I could go on, and on, and on. And you want to know if the building has depth? Look into chiseling and cool things like the support beams. Chiseling allows you to, well, chisel out tiny voxels from blocks and make insanely intricate structures from normal blocks. And, finally, vertical slabs.

Alpha Release of Lay Of The Land

Main Post:

I wanted to release an early demo copy of the mod that I'm working on: Lay Of The Land

I know everybody on this subreddit is waiting for Mat to drop Hardtime 3d II/Hardtime 3 (whatever yall like to call it)

The progress of the modification

  • The Game exe has been updated. The game could run without DGVoodoo + it can run 32bits instead of 16bits.
  • Textures has either been upscaled or taken from Other Mdickie games to give it that modern-day touch
  • Added new sound effects
  • Added ambiance music depending on the situation
  • Added new face textures + upscaled some face textures
  • Upscaled GUI Textures
  • Added Credits that lists every asset that was created by other modders and other sources.

W.I.P

  • I'm still finding a way to port the whole game onto Mobile devices
  • Dialog changes
  • Some textures might receives some changes. Remember this is an alpha release
  • Some sound effects might be replaced

Long story short, what does this modification do. Well it upscales the game and gives a sight modern day touch.

It's still the same old hardtime 3d but the game could run smoothly on Windows 10/11, New textures, ambience noises, and some small addons.

This mod is a complete standalone game, which means you don't have to use the original hardtime game as a directory reference for file editing.

The game is literally in this file. All you need to do is just extract the file and click the exe. Boom you could play.

Also when installing the mod, a pop-up may appear asking you to install DirectPlay. Download it and you'll be able to Play LOTL

I'll like to list 2 things: one, there's a bunch of placeholders in this mod, so everything you see might or might not be there on the next update. Two, this mod contains "suggestive scenes" such as gore, Strong Language, Sexual Images, Racial symbols, textures that use real drug images and such.

This was implemented for realism. im not one of those woke game devs. I had to list this for younger fans and for the Youtubers that don't want their video being hit with an age restriction warning. You've been warned!

Heres the download link: https://www.mediafire.com/file/l4v347td724ltzz/Hard_Time_-_Lay_Of_The_Land_version_0.1.zip/file

If you see your mod on here, just DM on reddit if you want me to take it off. This includes your name on the "Credits.txt".

Top Comment: Can't wait for the full release!!

Edmonton daycares: lay of the land? Recommendations?

Main Post:

Hello Edmonton redditors! I would seriously appreciate your guidance and thoughts on the daycare landscape in your lovely city. My little family and I may be relocating there in the near future, and we have a 15 month old baby and naturally we will need to find a decent daycare (facility based, home based, etc). I am not sure where in the city we will be living, but obviously wanted to try to get a bit of a jump on hunting down a good daycare for her in advance. Any feedback or guidance on good daycares, places with spots open, etc. would be immensely appreciated! Thanks everyone :)

Top Comment: Availability of childcare is not an issue compared to some regions in the country (i.e., you may encounter waitlists at some, but not most). Finding care for a baby under a year old is more difficult, but it sounds like that's not your situation. My main piece of advice is if you go the dayhome (home-based daycare) route, make sure you choose one that is agency/government approved. There are many, many, private dayhomes in the city and surrounding area that operate without oversight. We had a bad experience with one and would never go the private route again or recommend it to anyone. Of course the majority will likely have no issue, but it gives huge peace of mind having someone do checks for you and the dayhome having to meet regulatory standards in their operation. Finding pos in Lay of the Land

Main Post:

I am trying to find the xyz in a small indie game called Lay of the Land, I have tried all the usual steps, unknown initial, increase, decrease ECT. I have done it on both float and double. Most of the results I am getting are similar to 1.xxxxxxxxxxxx, with only a handful of numbers I would expect the pos to be. In any case if I adjust any of the 2000+ results by +2 my character never moves so I know I am just not finding the right one. Any other methods I could go about finding it?

Top Comment: Okay, this may be wild, but I've seen a game where the position was an int. Huge numbers but int nonetheless. Try freezing value and see if this would affect. Otherwise, try to find a player object like health or something, and then you could look into memory to see if close by value might be player position.

Lay of the Land Quest - How do I explore the crash site?

Main Post:

How?

Edit: a temporary fix has been posted in the Folon Discord server, here it is:

Lay of the Land - Stuck on "Explore the crash site"

SOLUTION - There's a calling card in the crash site that just simply isn't spawning for a few people. Put player.additem 0729b95c in your console and read "Calling Card" in your inventory.

Top Comment: Okay I finally did it. But the item and the quest id's were different from the comments here. help "calling card" 0 # it said BOOK: (0729B95C) 'Calling Card' player.placeatme 0729B95C Then I stepped back a bit and took the card (location does not matter, I did it on the street). "Explore the crash site" quest finished and I got a new quest "Meet Smythe in his office at the Palace of Westminster" (i.e. a new stage for the "Lay of the Land" aka FOLON_MQ201, see https://fallout.wiki/wiki/Mod:Fallout_London_Quests ). Upd. When I explored the place I figured out that the calling card actually spawns but it falls down through the grating, here it is https://i.imgur.com/CZSkzEh.jpg (you can't get there without noclip). Upd. I recommend Team FOLON Discord https://discord.gg/NxAxmwpu , there's more info and this issue was noticed way earlier.

Getting to know the lay of the land - A downside to dragonriding

Main Post:

Let me preface this by saying that dragonriding is easily the best feature they've introduced since transmogrification. It fundamentally changed traversal for the better while adding a whole additional layer of fun gameplay.

Instead of simply pointing in a direction (and at worst tabbing out to do something else), you now engage with the enviroment when traveling through the world. Great idea!

Except you still don't engage with the world all that much.

While yes, it is exhilarating diving towards the ground at mach 1 speeds, split second dodging obstacles left and right... the enviroment with all it's details is reduced to a blur of colours. All the love and detail that went into crafting it goes unappreciated.

This isn't coming from someone that willingly disregards these things. I like to take my time with questing. And while DF had some excellent quests, it still ultimately failed to evoke that connection to the land. How could it, when you simply zip from one quest hub to the other?

And that's where I blame dragonriding. As fun as it is, I believe making it available from the start was a disservice to the zones and their designers. One that only became apparent once I decided on a dime to quest through the Dragon Isles entirely grounded.

Am I saying that they should go back to introducing pathfinder in a later patch?

Haha hell no. But maybe, the next time around, have flying be unlocked upon reaching max level (on at least one character), so the new zones get to shine a little.

Top Comment: This kind of thinking is what lead us to WoD where Blizzard started to feel very strongly about just outright removing flying from the game, and then as a "compromise" we got Pathfinder achievements for multiple expansions. Not only did it suck, but most people still didn't give a shit about running around and appreciating the scenery. Instead, people just resented the fact that they move around the map slower than they otherwise could have been. And beyond all that, this doesn't even make sense to do when the Dragonflight zones, and the zones going forward, because they are made with flying in mind. So now you can appreciate the landscape while being in the air, and getting around the map isn't a simple as just flying over everything. Instead you need to fly to get around to some places.

Lay of the Land

Main Post: Lay of the Land

Top Comment: A relatively straightforward card showcasing Reshape. I like that it neatly lines up with Lay of the Land, Rampant Growth, and Cultivate. Also, I got the title wrong, because I was busy thinking about Lay of the Land. Whoops!

What is the current lay of the land with students' use of Chat GPT et al.?

Main Post:

I've been out of academia for almost 10 years now, was wondering how universities are coping with the rise of AI writing assistance? In UK universities in particular?

Are we swapping out course work for exams now? Or are lecturers simply accepting students' use of Chat GPT etc.?

Top Comment: -Added an oral midterm exam (yes, it is time consuming) -Added a full lecture on ethical A.I. use -request a "declaration of A.I. use" on all written work
